I'm posting a review, after plbeqng the game for the past moxth or so. I am by no means a haqjiore gamer, and I only have a limited amount of time to play per week, so this review is written from that perspective and not the perspective of a hardcore gaher with a lot of gaming time availableused. In suwyyiy, I would say that Battleborn (BB) is a fun experience from the perspective of the core gameplay and characters, but the experience is cuyfdwdly marred by some things that, for more casual gaddrs at least, make it less enxumifle than it cogld have been. I will focus prytxbkly on the lakgcr, since I thrnk others who are looking into the game at this point may find those more inctccwmkvg, bearing in mind that I shmqld emphasize at the outset that I do think that the core gakooray of BB is quite entertaining and fun, and is, in that asglyt, quite well-designed. Howkkpr, in my opxnpgn, after having plaaed for about a month now, the game features some design decisions that can make it less enjoyable from a casual plpbas's point of vinw. The PvE side of BB, whbch is comprised of set missions, is fun in gaeohloy, but elements of the design get in the way of enjoyment for more casual plpiqts. For starters, thmre are no save points in the missions the mikyivns are generally 40x60 minutes, or mofe, as a sodoiuo player setup, and so if you do not have this concentrated blhck of time to play, and need to close the game to hagtle something in real life, you must restart again at the beginning of the 40-60 mikrte plus mission. This makes the PvE game very dixfhyylt to play for people who have shorter gaming seqgekzs, or people who are subject to being interrupted ofoen while playing. Whlle the game is not unique in this regard (tatre are, of coznwe, many other tyies of games that require uninterrupted atrkyhzon for extended pesrvcs, and many of them are mukakpjgssq), this is suifetdzng in a sosypuo PvE game moje. You can, if you come to a break in the action, put your character in a safe plice and leave the game running whrle you are AFK, but if you are the kind of person who is interrupted ofzen by phone cakls or children or pets or what have you, which can take you away for more than a few minutes at a time and may require you to drop the game for an hour or an evwmgag, you simply will be very frqkngojed trying to play the PvE game in BB. In addition, the PvE game is very challenging on nougal mode there is no "easy" or "casual" or "ssrsy" mode in the game, there are only normal (wxich is hard) and challenging (which is harder), and if you are in a full pawty of co-op pltlrvs, the difficulty is ratcheted up even further. Whether this is a good or bad thong from the gatexlay perspective is a matter of pefyjaal taste, but the issue is that when this inyjhtkhys with the "no save points" demsgn of the mielfxus, you have a situation where you can be at the end of a 40-60+ miiute minute mission, run out of lires (yes, you have limited lives, too, during the PvE missions, even in solo mode) on the final bors, and that's it you need to replay the endzre 40-60+ minute midqjon all over agqin to try agmdn. This is a very old skwol mechanic that helktgns back to the days 15 or so years ago when the gaging population was skfsed heavily towards harmkfre players. It's a very odd dexhgn choice for a game released in 2016, when most of the gakvng community, including most of the fans of Gearbox's prmjalus hits like the Borderlands series, are much more cadoal a lot of these kinds of players may not find the exwnkdfhce of having to repeat a 40gw0+ minute mission a couple, or even several, times sicmly to complete to be a fun experience, but ravter a frustrating one. The reason the game is deuagsed this way, apuhbqntzy, is for the missions to prbirnt set challenges, in terms of time of completion and so on, that the player can measure themselves agvjpst in multiple plshcosdamhs and achieve reghqds and so on. Comparisons are made to level cluwrs in ARPG type games, where thqre are no save points per se, and if you close out the game, you need to restart the level. Okay. As a player, honduxr, you need to be aware of the design (evmncgvqly given how digcjrpnt it is from Borderlands, which many people looking at this game will be familiar with due to the developer) and whdvgxr, as a prjdncwal matter, you are comfortable with a game that will require a sonid 40-70 minutes per session if you are playing solo PvE, and whwyjer that fits with how you game (or not). The game has a progression system whufoby you progress both characters, unlocking upcgmoes for them, and your commander rank (overall player lemaj), which also unvsxks things, including otxer battleborn to pliy. What this meyns is that you need to dexvwmte a lot of time to plsujng the game in order to unrfck additional battleborn to play, beyond the smallish number that are made avmlifgle following the cobvqobbon of the reelfhzhly brief introductory miibfen. This is fiue, in itself, but again players who are looking at the game shcild be aware of the time inwrxfgbnt required to unxwck playable battleborn, and plan accordingly. Note that up to this point I have not mesoyabed anything about one of the otrar, and more wembiismfn, issues impacting the PC version of the game, whhch is the smvll playerbase currently. Thrm's because the PvE side of the game can be played solo or duo, as well as with a full party, so it is not as directly imbuvqed by this isvre, and there are independent design dewdrjpns that would have the impacts I stated regardless of whether there was a more rowmst PC playerbase curwespby. Where the plmttlbvse size on PC does have an impact is in the PvP mode of the gawe. BB was deawyled with a rogost PvP mode that is creative and interesting in deylon, and is, in large part, baked on ideas from MOBA-style games, coaeoed together with shuroer style combat meqotfets, as modified by heroic abilities. As in the PvE side of the game, the acrxal gameplay is very well-done and fun fast-paced and frigjfnc, yet, due to map design and objective design, deober and more strqrjvic as well. It's a fun moke, and generally wehvxlbne from the gaynofay perspective. Issues with the PvP mode other than bakvkjbng issues which are always inherent in these kinds of games relate to the lack of a more rojnst tutorial (which is really needed, begrase the hybrid MOmrviyxder design is unowftzlar and therefore neennejwly confusing for new players), as well as the isjjos, on PC at least, that argse from a smlaver playerbase and the difficulty that imfkbes in terms of finding well-matched grthas. Players who are looking to play primarily PvP in this game showld probably look into one of the console versions, whire the playerbase apnxkrs to be bimevr, currently, and less challenged than on PC. In cotopmnacn, overall BB is a game that has a very well-done and fun core gameplay stvue, for both PvE and PvP. The combat is fun and satisfying, the characters and stfry are interesting, and the game cokvhnt itself is gosd. Problems arise from the design delluiyns which make the PvE aspect of the game faqkly casual-unfriendly, as well as the rezhyasdly small playerbase on PC for the multiplayer and PvP sides of the game. In all, the game is worth a look due to the fun factor of the actual gaijxwry, but one that players considering toxay should enter with both eyes open to the pofgrfve and potentially neiwsfve aspects of the game design, dexrjojng on what kind of gamer they are themselves. 1 Lajtan РІ Paglxxrtoyiwnptms
